Beautiful Málaga

Read more on "Beautiful Málaga" »

Málaga is one of the most popular destinations in Spain. The capital of  Malaga province, the city is the fifth most populous in the country. Situated in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula, it has a surface of 398.25 square kilometres and has about 568,000 inhabitants. Most people live in the metropolitan area.

Beautiful Málaga

Málaga is located in two river valleys, the Guadalhorce and the Guadalmedina, and its location has had a large influence on the city’s geography, history and climate. The territory of the city is washed by the warm Mediterranean Sea, and the Málaga Mountains protect it from the cold. As a result, the mild climate and warm temperatures make Malaga a perfect destination for thousands of tourists. Summer month are the hottest ones here, with a high temperature around 22.8° C. The coldest season of the year is winter, with temperatures dropping to 13° C. Autumn and winter in Malaga are usually the rainy seasons with the most precipitation.

When you first arrive in Malaga, you will be captivated and amazed by the city’s natural beauty. The environment here is incredible: it is rich with verdant parks, sparkling sand on the coastline, a bright turquoise sea, landscaped garden promenades and a gentle seaside. The ecological value of the nature on the island of 122 hectares is incredible. A large number of animal species makes this place an excellent getaway for wildlife lovers. One of the most popular destinations here is the Natural Park Montes de Málaga, which occupies an area of almost 5,000 hectares and contains over 230 plant species and more than 150 types of vertebrates.

Beautiful Málaga

Most tourists think of Málaga as just a gateway to the beach resorts of the Costa del Sol

However, the city is being renovated due to an increase in tourists, a large number of investments and government development projects. This reinvention is changing the city considerably. Right now, with the strong efforts of mayor Francisco de la Torre and his innovative vision, the city is turning into a cultural hub.

Beautiful Málaga

Among the city’s sights that you should visit (in case you don’t want to spend your entire holiday on the beach with a cocktail in one hand and a book in the other):

  • Alcazaba fortress – a great mix of of gardens and fountains;
  • 10th-century Gibralfaro castle that stands guard over the coast
  • Renaissance cathedral, nicknamed La Manquita (“one-armed woman”);
  • Atarazanas Market – originally built by the Moors as a ship builder’s yard. Today it is the most famous market in the city;
  • Picasso Museum – Malaga’s most renowned museum honoring its most famous artist;
  • Montes de Malaga – a dream place for hikers and all wildlife lovers. It is located only a few kilometres from the city centre;
  • El Tintero – a famous restaurant, located outside of the city in the area of El Palo. Specializing in local seafood, the place is perfect for romantic evenings and family dinners.
As we just mentioned food, we should say a little more about it

Thanks to the city’s subtropical climate and maritime location, the cuisine of the area is exceptional, with local wine, popular local jamón and some of the best seafood on the coast – the locals are nicknamed boquerones (anchovies) because of how much they eat. As in other coastal cities, the city is full of different bars and restaurants where you can taste local and European food. However, locals are used to eating late, even after 10 p.m., so be prepared for late dinners if want to really experience the atmosphere of the city.

8 STUNNING PICTURES OF ICELAND (PLUS DETAILED PHOTO TIPS)

Read more on "8 STUNNING PICTURES OF ICELAND (PLUS DETAILED PHOTO TIPS)" »

Iceland, a land of otherworldly landscapes, is a photographer’s dream destination. A Virtuoso colleague recently traveled to the country with his wife and shares his photography tips (and beautiful photos) here.

1: Water.

Water provides constant motion that you can take advantage of by lowering the shutter speed to give it a nice, smooth feel. This of course requires the camera be mounted on a sturdy tripod. It also helps to have a remote shutter release so pressing the shutter button doesn’t shake it. If you don’t have a remote handy, use the camera’s self-timer for the shorter duration to take the shot.

2: Sunset Shooting.

Shooting into the sunset is always harder than it looks – our eyes see one thing, but the camera sees it very differently. Our eyes can capture the full dynamic range of colors, where even the latest of cameras still can’t. Use the HDR (High Dynamic Range) setting, which captures details from bright and dark areas to help avoid a completely dark foreground.

3: Icelandic Horses.

Icelandic horses make great photo subjects. They’re typically friendly and curious, which helps when trying to get their attention. Set the ISO high for a fast enough shutter speed, which will help with keeping the frame sharp even if the horses are moving. Having the aperture open wide helps with blurring the background, which makes the focused area pop.

4: People.

Iceland’s popularity makes it tricky to take a landscape shot without a tourist in it. But having people in a frame can be helpful when you are looking for depth of field and scale. In this shot, the row of rocks guide viewers’ eyes into the perspective. The people show the scale of the glacier and the peak behind it.

5: Mixed Light Situations.

There’s a significant difference between the light spectrum inside the cave versus outside it, as you can see in this photo. Shooting in HDR will compensate for this, especially if there is something interesting outside the cave such as sunrise or sunset. Most pro and semi-pro cameras do a decent job at capturing the dynamic range and merging them into a single image.

6: Abandoned Houses.

Iceland has its share of abandoned houses, often decorated with graffiti,  which makes the entire setting more interesting. Technically, this is an easy shot, but the composition matters a lot. The surrounding makes this photo pop – if I zoomed in to just frame the house, it wouldn’t be as compelling.

7: Black and White.

Black and white photographs have their own charm! Without colors to help make the photo appealing to our eyes, you have to get the composition right, plus find the right texture in a frame.

What’s texture? In this photo, some icebergs are transparent and others are translucent. Notice the black beach and how the clouds and sky provide yet another layer along with the ocean. These are the textural elements that eliminate the need for colors.

8: Shooting in the Dark

When you’re waiting for aurora borealis to show itself, have fun shooting in complete darkness while almost frozen. This shot was taken at a high ISO to get fast shutter speed (I didn’t want any star trails).

Shooting in-focus in the pitch dark presents another challenge. Try using a small flashlight with high lumens – point it at a faraway object and focus on that. That is your infinity focus – shoot away!

Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty

Read more on "Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty" »

The perfect vacation begins with the right planning. Take a look at our selection of the  best places to visit in Costa Rica on your dream vacation!

Poás Volcano National Park

Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty

Poás Volcano represents the amazing natural forces of Costa Rica. Take a hike to the crater rim, but don’t worry about an eruption: the last time the volcano was active was in 1954. The Poás Volcano National Park is one of the most popular sites in the country. It is situated near the city of San José and the international airport.

The weather in this park is cool and humid, with lots of light rain, and the average temperature here is about 15ºC. The climate within Poás Volcano National Park creates perfect conditions for all of the fast-growing flora around. The main crater is one of the largest in the world. While all the main tours in the park include a hike to the crater rim, we also recommend a visit to La Paz Waterfall, a beautiful creation of nature in San José.

Arenal Volcano National Park

Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty

Another volcanic National Park located in Costa Rica, Arenal is famous for its great variety of attractions for every type of tourist. If you’re looking for an adventurous encounter with nature at its most spectacular, this destination is for you.

If the Poas Volcano is considered to be active, the Arenal Volcano is currently dormant. Frequent eruptions – over 40 per day – went off until 2010. Recently the volcano became non-active. Among numerous activities offered here, you can experience hot spring pools, get a hot stone massage, visit the Arenal Observatory Restaurant & Bar, and enjoy the beauty of gardens and unforgettable viewpoints.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty

Manuel Antonio National Park is located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, just south of Quepos on the Pacific Coast, 132 km from San José. Here the natural diversity is very rich and surprises with its great variety and beauty. For tourists, the park offers a wealth of exciting activities.

The coast of the Manuel Antonio region strikes every visitor with its beauty and calmness. The National Park is closed on Mondays and has three of the most amazing beaches in Costa Rica. It also has forest trails, bordered by a dense rainforest teeming with animal life. In 2011, it was named by Forbes as one of the world’s most beautiful parks. The smallest park in Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio is worth a visit for even the most experienced tourists.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Costa Rica’s Natural Beauty

Monteverde translates as “Green Mountain”. It is a beautiful reserve of magnificent, green vegetation, with great plant biodiversity and cloud forests. National Geographic described it as “the jewel in the crown of cloud forests.” In 2007, Costa Ricans voted the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve one of the country’s seven wonders. This forest is a true miracle of ecotourism in the country.
