The islands of the Caribbean Sea or West Indies includes more than 7,000 islands; 13 are independent island countries and some are dependencies or overseas territories of other nations. are an extensive archipelago in the far west of the Atlantic Ocean, mostly strung between North and South America.
Being for a long time a destination for honeymooners and retirees only, the Caribbean have become very popular with the new developing tour programs of eco-tourism and backpacking. Nowadays it is a resort destination for all kinds of travelers, and also for independent ones.
Geographically, the Caribbean area includes the Caribbean Sea and all of the islands located to the southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, east of Central America and Mexico, and to the north of South America. The weather is sunny and hot all the year round, that’s why with hundreds of islands to explore, the Caribbean offers something for almost everyone.
The Caribbean islands were first inhabited by the Arawak Indians, invaded afterward by a more combatant tribe, the Caribs. Before European contact, in the 15th century, the population of the Caribbean was about 900,000 indigenous people, right before European contact. Later, in 1492, Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer start his trip to the Caribbean, becoming the first European to discover the area.
Subsequently, many explorers followed in his path including Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French, Danish, and British who arrived here. Afterward, the Carib population gradually diminished due to diverse reasons. The islands have experienced multiple historical battles and numerous pirate stories.
Across the Caribbean, a significant number of African slaves were imported to work the sugar and tobacco plantations. There were many fights of different military powers for the Islands domination, which was the reason of a blended mix of African and European cultures and languages transformation. Today the Islands of Caribbean Sea are one of the premier tourist destinations on the planet.
