Bairro Alto. Lisbon, Portugal

Read more on "Bairro Alto. Lisbon, Portugal" »

Bairro Alto (Upper District) – is a central district of the Lisbon city in Portugal. Located in the Portuguese capital, this district has no local political authority. However, the historical and cultural relevance of Barrio Alto for the municipal community is high.

The whole area of the district was built up in the 16th century. Modern Bairro Alto is the place of shopping, entertainments, and nightlife. From its several observation decks, you can observe picturesque views of the city. In this regard, the area traditionally was a bohemian retreat of artists and writers. Every evening this district, which is quiet during daytime, comes to life. There are a lot of various small restaurants of traditional ethnic and international cuisine, many bars and different shops which remain open until late night. Also, a large number of theaters is concentrated here.

Bairro Alto. Lisbon, Portugal

Bairro Alto has a structured scheme of roads and lines. The roads go perpendicular to the river, while
the lanes, or secondary axis, cut parallel to the river

The Bairro or “neighborhood” resulted from urban expansion in the 16th century, forming outside the walls of the historic city, and is characterized by an almost orthogonal tract (developing from two phases of distinct urbanization).

The main commercial streets in Bairro Alto are Rua do Norte, Rua da Atalaia, and Rua do Diario de Noticias. It’s hard to stay indifferent to the beautiful garden terrace with a panoramic view over the city called Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. City’s main churches are located in the District: São Roque made in baroque style and the romantic Gothic ruins of Carmo Church.
The architecture of the district is very diverse; it varies from the Pombaline-era buildings to modern European styles.
